Food vs Greenhouse Gas Emissions


It is a well known fact that meat products (such as beef, lamb, mutton, and pig) release the largest GHG emissions. Science, a peer reviewed and trustworthy source, released a study a few years prior that emissions from plant-based foods are 10 to 50 times lower than animal-based foods (Poore, 2019).


What is not more prominently stated is that sugary products (such as pastries, ice cream, & sugar-sweetened drinks) also account for large percentages of the GHG emissions related to food. The online publisher, Visual Capitalist records trends and scientific data. A recent publication by editor and financial advisor Dorothy Neufeld, showed that 1kg of Chocolate emits 19kg of greenhouse gas emissions. In comparison, the greenhouse gas emissions produced by nuts, fruits, and root vegetables is close to 0. (see Figure 1 below)
